TermCoord welcomes I·ATE, a new terminology resource to promote gastronomy as an essential part of our European heritage and education.
I·ATE is an interactive multilingual glossary on culinary terms that allows to share common knowledge, discover and preserve related concepts widespread across Europe.
We live in a blossoming age of gastronomy, and the EU is strongly committed to preserving and promoting European know-how in food production. With this aim it has implemented policies on quality food and established quality schemes such as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG). Moreover, the European Parliament has recently adopted a Report on the European Gastronomic Heritage that calls upon the Commission and EU countries to further include European gastronomic heritage in culture-related initiatives and policies.
TermCoord wants to become involved in this challenge and believes that a linguistic consciousness is necessary to promote the EU high quality food that is linked to its local traditions and different landscapes. It is essential to raise the awareness and knowledge of citizens on food in the EU to boost the production and be attractive on an international level.
Terminology plays a role in the investigation and preservation of the concepts. It helps therefore, to promote terms especially through related professions such as translation, technical writing and communication.
How does I·ATE work?
I·ATE works on the basis of the relationship between the concept and its designations in the European multilingual environment. The glossary presents a culinary term and its equivalents in the countries in which the concept exists. Every term is linked to a map displaying a geographical area that indicates how gastronomy can go beyond national borders. This leads to an historical reflexion linked to a cultural and common traditional heritage.
The aim is also to propose an active glossary so that the user can submit a suggestion by a specific form to add a designation and a definition with picture.
Furthermore, every Saturday TermCoord will propose an article on culinary terminology to present and investigate the prosperity of our diverse gastronomy.
